"The Vampire Diaries" season 8 may not see Nina Dobrev returning in the finale.

In an interview with E! News, The CW boss Mark Pedowitz said that they are supporting executive producer Julie Plec's desire to have Dobrev return to the season 8 finale. Unfortunately, Dobrev hasn't confirmed whether or not she will reprise her role as Elena Gilbert.

"We collectively came to the same place. We backed Julie Plec in her decision... there are discussions going on with Nina, we'd love to have her back. These are discussions that go on, hopefully she'll be back, but should it not work out, Julie has planned out a great series finale for fans," he said.

Meanwhile, Pedowitz admitted that he personally likes the idea of Elena appearing in the finale episode of "The Vampire Diaries" season 8. In fact, if it were up to him, he would also be open to having the actress return in more than one episode.

However, Pedowitz also reminded fans that there was a reason why Dobrev left "The Vampire Diaries" season 6 in the first place. At that time, the actress was more interested in pursuing other projects outside The CW series.

"I always like to have Nina. Who doesn't like to have Nina on the show? She was a great person to have. She was a great spokesperson for The CW and for 'The Vampire Diaries.' She made a career decision that, for her, was probably the right decision but we'd love to have her back. But again, if it cannot work out, Julie will take care to have a really satisfactory series finale," he stressed.

In other news, there are ongoing rumors that Ian Somerhalder's wife Nikki Reed may also make an appearance in at least one episode of "The Vampire Diaries." Unfortunately, Pedowitz didn't comment on the rumors which may suggest that there's no truth to it.

As of late, the cast of "The Vampire Diaries" season 8 are already filming for the upcoming episodes.

"The Vampire Diaries" season 8 will premiere on The CW on Oct. 21 at 8 p.m. ET.
