Sam is in deep trouble in "Supernatural" Season 12, and it will be up to Dean and Castiel to save him. But will their combined efforts be enough?

In the latest trailer for "Supernatural" Season 12, Sam is held captive by the Men of Letters. It's likely he's going to get tortured so that the Men of Letters can extract information from him. With that said, Dean and Castiel are on a mission to rescue to save Sam.

Although in the trailer it appears that Dean and Castiel's combined efforts is not enough, there's certainly a lot of twists fans can look forward to. Actor Misha Collins, who plays Castiel, teased that viewers will see more of the "badass warrior" Castiel they saw in "Supernatural" Season 4.

Speaking to Variety, Collins said Castiel has got "much of his mojo back... he's angry and he's in a fighting spirit and he's after Lucifer. And now that Mary's back, he's tattletaling a lot."

Interestingly, more of Castiel's past will be uncovered in an episode dedicate to the character. Castiel will be used in stand-alone episodes "in a way that he hasn't been used in a long time."

"That's very heavily about Castiel and the journey he's been on, some things from his past that we're not aware of are getting brought to light," writers Andrew Dabb told EW about the Castiel-centric episode 12.

Meanwhile, one of the exciting things that's to come in "Supernatural" Season 12 is the return of Sam and Dean's mother, Mary. The character was resurrected in season 11 as a gift to dean from Amara.

Family will come as a whole new experience to the Winchester brothers, who grew up never knowing how it feels like having a mother. "It presents a dynamic we haven't had," actor Jensen Ackles said. "When mom [died], Sam was a baby and Dean was a child... The children that she knew are now men, the relationship is kind of nonexistent, so it's going to be an interesting situation of them trying to bridge the gap that occurred over the last thirty-some years."

As for Castiel, he will have a "very specific response to Mary" and might share an interesting bond in Season 12.

"Supernatural" Season 12 premieres Oct. 13, Thursday on The CW.
