General Motors is recalling 4.3 million vehicles due to air bag problems. One death is linked to the massive recall of GM vehicles having faulty air bags.
On Friday, General Motors Corporation announced that they will recall about 4.3 million GM vehicles worldwide because of software defects which are causing a prevention of deployment of air bags during crashes, Reuters reported. This air bag problem has already been linked to three injuries and one death.
In July and August 2016, General Motors coordinated with Delphi Automotive to investigate and study the occurrences that involve the similar vehicles and similar allegations of non-deployments of faulty air bags which includes legal claims. Delphi Automotive supplied the sensing and diagnostic module that is controlling the pretensioner and faulty air bags.
In August 2016, General Motors Co. conducted vehicles testing which occurred in GM's Milford Proving Ground. On August 31, the General Motors Co.'s Safety and Field Action Decision Authority decided to mandate a recall to address the issues involving the air bag problems.
General Motors, the number three biggest automaker in the world said that the diagnostic and sensing module which controls the deployment of the air bag has software flaws that could prevent the deployment of the frontal air bags in particular "rare instances".
General Motors are recalling several of the recent newer models of the Chevrolet Corvette, Buick LaCrosse, Chevrolet Tahoe, Silverado 1500, Cadillac Escalade and Suburban and Silverado HD. These are from 2014 to 2017 GM models.
Despite the air bag problem issues, The Detroit News reported that General Motors Co. spokesman Tom Wilkinson expressed that they generally regard the "GM vehicles safe" to be driven.
GM stated to NHTSA that after August 24, they added the re-flashed software to every GM vehicle built. General Motors will inform and update its dealers and customers when the software for faulty air bags could be availed for free.
General Motors stated that the recall of SUVs, cars, and trucks of the years 2014 to 2017 GM models will not have a substantial effect on GM's financial standing. The stock of General Motors has fallen as the news of the faulty air bags problems emerged. The trading got down $0.90 per share to $30.81, which is lower by 2.8 percent.
