Bayer Leverkusen, who finished third in the Bundesliga last season, began the season shakily with two losses in its first three games as resident striker Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez was sidelined by injury. With the Mexican's return, the team was able to string a couple of unbeaten performances.

Following a goalless draw with Augsburg in round four, Bayer nipped Mainz, 3-2, on the road at the Coface Arena last Saturday for only their second win in five matches, as per ESPN.

Hernandez unleashed a hat trick in the match, at the 32nd, 66th and in injury time, to lead head coach Roger Schmidt's men in the high-scoring encounter.

Mainz midfielder Yunus Malli scored the opening goal at the 31st, which was immediately answered by Hernandez with his first goal. Die Nullfünfer took the lead once more at the 35th with a close range left-footer from defender Stefan Bell as the hosts carried a 2-1 advantage at the break.

Hernandez was far from finished, though, as he scored the next two goals in the second half to pull off the come-from-behind win.

Meanwhile, last season's runner-up squad Borussia Dortmund is still at its dominant form, winning four games out of five to kick off the term.

The team is on a three-game winning streak, with their last game ending in a 3-1 romp over newly-promoted side SC Freiburg at the Signal Iduna Park last Friday, via SkySports.

Gabonese striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Polish defender Lukasz Piszczek netted the first two goals of the game at the 45th and 53rd before the visitors were able to respond with a right-footer from midfielder Maximilian Philipp right at the hour mark,

Portuguese defender Raphael Guerreiro sealed the win for head coach Thomas Tuchel's side with a goal in stoppage time.
