"Fences" film is an adaptation of the 1983 "Fences" play by American playwright August Wilson and was initially set in the 1950s. The play won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play in 1987.

Just like the play, the "Fences" film explores the evolving African-American experience and seeks to discover race relations, among other themes. It is directed by Washington himself and stars Davis, Stephen Henderson, Jovan Adepo, Mykelti Williamson, Russell Hornsby, and Saniyya Sidney.

In the movie, a former black league baseball player Washington (Troy Maxson), who now works as a waste collector, finds himself struggling to provide for his family while trying to come to terms with life's events. The setting, also similar to that of Wilson's play, is a front yard of Washington's family in 1950s.

Washington is afraid of witnessing the same racial discrimination that held him back, when he was young, do the same to his son. He plays the resentful patriarch "fenced" by domestic responsibilities and suffocated by racism.

Davis, on the other hand, reprises her role as Washington's wife (Rose Maxson), who goes through life's torture, just like her husband. She remains resilient even when the family is facing its toughest times.

"Fences" principal photography commenced on April 25 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Although the movie takes place more than six decades back, its themes have a profound resonance in the modern African-American society, according to Wired.

Earlier attempts to adopt Wilson's "Fences" play have been fruitless, mainly due to Wilson's insistence that the film should be directed by an African-American. "Fences" movie is scheduled for release on Dec. 25.
