The long-running "Dynasty Warriors" series is getting a brand new entry as Koei Tecmo announces "Dynasty Warriors 9." No platform has yet been announced although it has been confirmed that it will be an open-world title and will feature Zhou Cang as a playable character.

In the Japanese announcement trailer the game is labeled as the eighth entry in the franchise. In the West, this will be the ninth entry given that the first game is still listed even though it is a fighting game instead of a third-person hack-and-slash game.

According to Siliconera, producer Akihiro Suzuki could not yet reveal which gaming platforms it will release for. It is widely speculated it will be available for the PS4, Xbox One and Switch although these are still not yet certain.

"Dynasty Warriors 9" is the first main title in the series after several years and will celebrate the franchise's fifteenth anniversary. Because of its significance the developers are reportedly aiming to make this a "rebirth" of the franchise.

It is further noted that two steps have been done in order to make this feel like a reboot. The game will now be open-world instead of having closed-in stages and it is also going to feature the entire landmass of China as a playable area. The fields will also have towns and there will be elevated sections, suggesting the addition of mountainous regions, plateaus and hills.

All 83 characters from the previous game have been confirmed to appear in the ninth entry. A new playable character, Zhou Cang, has also been confirmed. In the "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" novel that the series is based on, Zhou Cang is depicted as a member of the Yellow Turban Rebellion and a close ally of Guan Yu.

The last game in the franchise was back in 2013, Gamespot reported. It has seen a few updates and re-releases, specifically for the PS4, PC and PS Vita. Instead of immediately jumping on to make a ninth game the developers worked on "Hyrule Warriors" for the 3DS and Wii U first.

No release date for "Dynasty Warriors 9" has been announced.
