"Lucifer" Season 2 will return with new episodes starting Jan. 16, but as early as now, the show's fate for Season 3 seems to have already been sealed.

On the show's official Twitter account handled by the writers of the hit FOX series, one fan asked whether or not "Lucifer" is a go for Season 3. The writers said that they are also excited to write more episodes for the show beyond Season 2, but reminded fans to first tune in to episode 11 this airing this month.

Meanwhile, the writers later on clarified that the series has not yet been renewed by the network, but there is no reason to fear because FOX execs ordered additional episodes for Season 2. When it was renewed in 2016, "Lucifer" Season 2 only had a total of 16 confirmed episodes.

In October, the series was requested to come up with six additional episodes making it a total of 22. FOX entertainment president David Madden said in a statement (via TV Line), "'Lucifer' continues to deliver, with great blasts of dark humor and ambitious storytelling. The show has turned out to be a true wicked pleasure, the perfect companion to 'Gotham,' and we could not be more pleased to order these nine additional episodes."

In other news, the upcoming episodes of "Lucifer" Season 2 are crucial because they will dictate how Season 3 should be told. While speaking with the same publication, showrunner Ildy Modrovich confirmed that Lucifer (Tom Ellis) and Chloe's (Lauren German) relationship will be jeopardized by Charlotte (Tricia Helfer).

The exec added that Amenadiel (D.B. Woodside) would also be choosing a side between Lucifer and Charlotte. However, he will soon realize that he might not have made the right choice. Elsewhere, Maze (Lesley-Ann Brandt) will go up against Lucifer and will physically hurt the lead character.

"Lucifer" Season 2, episode 11 will air on FOX on Jan. 16 at 9 p.m. EST.
