Viola Davis finally made it at the Golden Globe 2017 for winning the best supporting actress spot for the feature film "Fences." It was her 5th nomination in the prestigious award-giving body before landing on her first Globe victory.
Prior to Davis winning at the Golden Globe 2017, she was nominated two times for her film performances, "Doubt" and "The Help" and two times for her TV portrayal as Annalise Keating in "How to Get Away with Murder." Those awards were won by Meryl Streep, Kate Winslet, Ruth Wilson and Taraji P. Henson.
Davis did not only win the respected award, but the SAG and Emmy winner also won the hearts of the people, who heard her speech at the 74th Golden Globe Awards. During her Golden Globe award speech, the "How to get away with murder" star made it known the significance of American theater in telling untold real stories. She also honored her late father.
"To all the people who believed in this piece of work," Variety quoted Davis as saying during her speech. "It's not every day that Hollywood thinks of translating a play to screen. It doesn't scream money maker. But it does screams art."
Davis, who admitted that she is a friend and a fan of her co-star and director for "Fences" Denzel Washington, thanked thanked him for trusting her abilities. She called the actor/ director an extraordinary leader, a great actor and a director.
Naomie Harris, Nicole Kidman, Octavia Spencer and Michelle Williams were defeated by Davis over the Golden Globe 2017 award. All these contenders will again compete for the SAG award on Jan. 29.
In "Fences," Davis plays Rose Maxson opposite Denzel Washington, who plays the frustrated baseball player Troy Maxson. Both Davis and Washington won a Tony award for the 2010 stage adaptation of August Wilson's play.
Although it was the first time for Davis to win in the Golden Globe 2017, she is not new in receiving honors for her work. She previously had two Academy Award nominations, two SAG awards for the movie "The Help" and an Emmy win and two more SAGs for the film "Murder."
Also during the event, Davis got the chance to pay tribute to the Golden Globe and Oscar-winning actress Meryl Streep. The "Fence" star, who had the opportunity to work with Streep on the 2008 "Doubt" called the latter her "muse."
As a fan, Davis wanted to tell Streep, how the latter has influenced the former as an actress. However, she did not get the chance to tell her those things until the Golden Globe 2017 when she presented the Cecil B. DeMille Award to Streep, Entertainment Weekly reported.
During Davis introduction, the Golden Globe 2017 best supporting actress described the Streep "like a high-powered scanning machine." In her emotional tribute, Davis thanked Streep for making her proud as an artist. Watch Davis' speech at the Golden Globes 2017 below:
