Sunderland is on a three-game winless skid and has been winless in five of their last six outings. The team has stayed in the relegation zone for quite a while, tied on points with fellow bottom three team Swansea City and two points ahead of cellar-dwellers Hull City.

The Black Cats are actually coming off an impressive 2-2 draw with title-contenders Liverpool also at the Stadium of Light on Jan. 2 to snap a two-game losing slide, as per the Telegraph.

English striker Jermain Defoe was the man of the match for head coach David Moyes as he led the team with a brace.

Liverpool opened the scoring in the 19th minute with a header over Sunderland goalkeeper Vito Mannone following a counter-attack before Defoe netted his first goal of the match six minutes later.

Sadio Mane then got back the lead for the Reds in the 72nd but Defoe was able to equalize again with a successful penalty kick in the 84th, his second goal of the game.

Meanwhile, Stoke City blanked struggling team Watford, 2-0, at the Bet365 Stadium on Jan. 3 to snap a five-game winless slide, ESPN reported.

Stoke captain Ryan Shawcross broke the deadlock with a goal in the first half injury time before veteran English forward Peter Crouch doubled the lead four minutes after the restart.

Both teams went scoreless after that as the Potters came away with a much-needed win.

Despite the victory, Stoke City remained in the 11th spot of the current league table, nine points above the bottom three relegation area.
