Starting Jan. 13, many Chinese travelers can be expected to be on the road to celebrate the Spring Festival or the Chinese New Year. The New Year is the most important holiday in China.
The Spring Festival holidays run from Jan. 27 to Feb. 2.
A record 3 billion trips are expected to be made during this year's mass migration, according to state media.
It is said that among the total number of trips, there will be 2.52 billion road trips, 360 million train trips and 58.3 million plane trips.
According to a report by the National Intelligent Transport Systems Centre of Engineering and Technology in China, the National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Transport, there will be 12 percent of trips to be made by railway, 84.6 percent by road, 1.4 percent by water and 2 percent by air.
The report indicated that the most preferred mode of transport is the bullet train, and the most popular rail lines include the Shanghai-Hangzhou, Shenzhen-Guangzhou, Chongqing-Chengdu, and Beijing-Shijiazhuang.
Cao, a 25-year-old resident from Beijing, said, "I set the alarm at 6 a.m. to try to get a train ticket home but have not got one yet."
According to the Economic Information Daily, the increase in passengers led to surcharges in prices of train tickets. Ctrip users have to pay an extra 1,071 yuan for a ticket from South China's Guangzhou to Changsha, Hunan Province.
Many residents from Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou are expected to go to Southwest China's Yunnan Province.
Thailand, Japan, and the U.S. are the Chinese tourists' top overseas destinations.
