After gaining quite a success in the box office in 2013, "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" was supposed to be followed up by a third installment. However, the path leading to its negotiation process had some bumps along the way until director D.J. Caruso was tapped to take the directorial duties in 2015.

Fans are now wondering as to what happened to the said project and what is keeping the production outfit from doing it. Caruso spoke with Collider at a screening for his newly released work, "xXx: The Return of Xander Cage" and revealed what happened to the said endeavor.

Prior to getting started with the project, Caruso stated that he pitched in his plans for the said film to both the production outfit and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. He added that the first two movies did quite good, though he believes that there is something missing to finally capture moviegoers' attention.

He then added that he brought up to the discussion the idea of a "G.I. Joe-Transformers" mashup. However, when the producers finished reading the entirety of the script, they then told him that they are not yet ready to embark on such storyline. He went on saying that the producers might think of pushing through with it by the time when filmmaker Michael Bay loses interest with "Transformers."

Meanwhile, a cinematic universe was being set up comprising of Hasbro's other works such as "Micronauts," "M.A.S.K.," "ROM: Space Knight," and even "Visionaries." Moreover, the upcoming movie franchise will be under the tutelage of both Paramount and Hasbro's Allspark Pictures, Coming Soon reported.
