King Kong and Godzilla are two of the most iconic and legendary fictional characters that ever graced the silver screen. Both equally powerful and massive personalities have starred in several movie adaptations, including the 1962 Japanese film "King Kong v. Godzilla." With "Kong: Skull Island" ready to make its way to theaters this year, there is an ongoing debate as to how King Kong and Godzilla would meet again in the big screen.

The Wrap has confirmed that both King Kong and Godzilla share the same movie universe under Warner Bros, and that both will star in the creature feature "Godzilla vs. Kong." For now, the movie has been set for a May 29, 2020 release date. Prior to that, "Godzilla 2" will hit theaters in 2019.

The connection between King Kong and Godzilla is the government organization called Monarch, and it will be explored further in "Kong: Skull Island." Monarch was first introduced in the 2014 movie "Godzilla." It was said that they knew more about Godzilla because they have had a firsthand encounter with its primate predecessor.

In "Kong: Skull Island," Tom Hiddleston's character, Conrad, is a former British Special Air Service soldier who joins the Skull Island expedition crew at the end of the Vietnam War in the 1970s. In an interview with CinemaBlend, producer Alex Garcia explained that Conrad encounters "a team of Monarch operatives," which he described as "a shadowy presence in the movie, who sort of jumpstart this expedition."

"It's a landslide expedition, officially, but John Goodman, who plays the guy from Monarch, is sort of pulling the strings in the background and we come to realize obviously that they knew much more than they let on initially."

However, Garcia explained that "Godzilla is not emerged into the modern world" at this point in the timeline yet, so "Kong: Skull Island" is pretty much just about King Kong's story.

"Kong: Skull Island" also stars Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, John C. Reilly, Corey Hawkins and Jason Mitchell. The movie will premiere in theaters on March 10.
