Netflix has confirmed that their latest original series will be an animated series based on the "Castlevania" video games. The first half of Season 1 will release this year although a more specific launch window was not stated.

Acclaimed producer Adi Shankar announced on his Facebook page that he would be co-running the series. Shankar is most recently popular as the producer for the 2012 film "Dredd." The series is being written by "Iron Man" scribe Warren Ellis, Polygon reported.

Michael Hirsh and his new animation studio, Wow Unlimted Media, will also be involved in the production. The studio aims to make this their next big venture in kids' programming and that they are targeting a younger audience, Hirsh explained in an interview with The Globe and Mail.

This would be contradictory to how Shankar previously described the direction they were aiming for with the "Castlevania" series. Shankar's description for the show indicated it would be dark, satirical and not shy from the horror and gore that the video games are known for.

Widespread rumors also suggest Fred Seibert, executive producer for the "Adventure Time" series, may be involved. Neither Netflix nor Seibert have yet confirmed that he is working with Hirsh or Shankar for the animated show.

"Castlevania" first launched in 1986 and has since grown with a number of sequels and spin-offs across multiple video game platforms. The vast majority of games focus on the Belmont family of vampire slayers and their never-ending battle against Dracula and his legion of followers.

It is still unknown if the Netflix series will focus on the story told in the original "Castlevania" game or if it will tell its own story, using the games solely as an inspiration. There is also the possibility of the show utilizing the plot from the "Castlevania: Lords of Shadow" reboot,

The most recent game in the franchise, "Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2," launched back in 2014. The official trailer can be viewed below:
