It was not even a contest. Chris Mckay's 3D computer-animated superhero action-comedy film "The Lego Batman Movie" continues its box office reign with $55.6 million, beating out "Fifty Shades Darker" and "John Wick: Chapter 2."

"The Lego Batman Movie," starring Will Arnet, Michael Cera, and Zach Galifianakis, is nearing the $100 million mark globally, according to IGN. It has grossed $53 million in the United States and Canada and another $37.2 million in other territories.

Taking the second spot was the erotic romantic drama film "Fifty Shades Darker," which debuted to $46.8 million. Coming in at No. 3 was the Keanu Reeves-starrer film "John Wick: Chapter 2" that earned an estimated $30 million, which is more than double what the first film racked up during its opening weekend.

Rounding out the top five were "Split" and "Hidden Figures," which earned $9.3 million and $8 million, respectively. "The Lego Batman Movie's" success came as a surprise to many as it thumped down competitors with larger budgets and bigger star power.

"Brick by brick, 'The Lego Movie' launched related stories," Warner Bros. President of Domestic Distribution Jeff Goldstein said in a press statement obtained by Variety. "This was just a fun and cool story."

"The Lego Batman Movie" might be kicking up some serious box-office numbers domestically, but some analysts had predicted the animated film would make more than $60 million. Still, the film has received mainly positive reviews from critics.

The story of "The Lego Batman Movie" revolves around Bruce Wayne aka Batman (Arnett), who must not only deal with the criminals of Gotham City, but also the responsibility of raising a boy he adopted. Meanwhile, below are the Top 10 weekend box office estimates:
