It is official now. The sequel of  the 1995 comedy "Mallrats" is currently in the works. The sequel has been announced by the director Kevin Smith in a radio show, "Rock 102 Mornings With Shmonty and Carolina."

"Yeah, that's what we're working on," Smith said during a radio interview with Rock 102 KMFA. "It's half a script right now, and we're pulling our loot together. We've got up until the beginning of 2016."

Earlier, Smith had teased his fans in a tweet few days ago writing "I smell a rat." The cryptic tweet send fans into frenzy giving rise to speculation of a new movie or a sequel. Although "Mallrats" failed miserably at the box office, the movie developed a strong cult following after its release on home videos.

Further details of the sequel are not yet confirmed. Nothing is official about the sequel's plot or the starcast. Since the sequel is coming out after a gap of 20 years, it is difficult to say which of the "Mallrats" original star, Jeremy London Jason Lee, Shannen Doherty, Claire Forlani, Joey Lauren Adams and Ben Affleck, will be able to make it to the sequel.

The movie's script is already half written and the shooting will start in May 2016. "Nobody's clamoring for a 'Mallrats' sequel, but I would love to make one. It's been like 20 years," Hollywood Reporter quoted the movie's 44-year-old director.

"Mallrats" is a story of two guys who seek solace in a mall after they're jilted by their girlfriends only to be chased around by security guards and ex-girlfriend's dad. The original film grossed $2.1 million at the box office and was the subject of much critical derision.
