Before "Guardians of the Galaxy 3" hits theaters, Marvel will unveil the highly anticipated and talked-about "Avengers: Infinity War" and "Avengers 4." With that said, Gunn revealed that the third "Guardians" movie's timeline will be set after the two "Avengers" film.

According to ScreenRant, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed that "Infinity War" will be set four years after "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2," and that there is a possibility that Mark Ruffalo's Hulk will go head-to-head with a fully-grown Groot.  So Feige's statement coincides with Gunn's big reveal.

Moreover, the events in "Guaridans of the Galaxy 3" will help establish the next decade for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, particularly the cosmic side of the MCU. After "Avengers 4" wraps up Phase 3 of the MCU, Marvel will begin to focus on bringing more cosmic characters to the fore.

Given the timeline, Gunn teased that fans can expect a more seasoned Guardians team when we see them in their next film. It is also said that a "Guardians of the Galaxy 4" may happen, although Gunn previously said that he might not return after filming the third "Guardians" film.

"I think the first three movies tell a single story and that story is pretty simple. I think that there could be a Guardians Vol. 4, but it would not be the same," Gunn told Toronto Sun. "It would not be the same group... basically the story of this group ends with Vol. 3."

Meanwhile, Star-Lord and the rest of the Guardians team will be joining all the action in "Avengers: Infinity War" as supporting characters. "Avengers: Infinity War" will hit theaters on April 25, 2018.
