In the aftermath of a harrowing mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine, that left 18 individuals dead and 13 injured, authorities have heightened their search efforts for the prime suspect, Robert Card, a US Army reservist. The Androscoggin River has become a focal point of the search, drawing divers, helicopters, and foot patrols, according to Maine Safety Commissioner Mike Sauschuk.
While the river remains a significant interest in the hunt, Sauschuk stresses the search is not confined to the area. "We are on 24/7 and we will be until the suspect in this case is brought to justice," he declared on Friday.
An intriguing development in the case is the discovery of a note at a location linked to Card. Though specifics about the note were not detailed, sources informed the Associated Press that it was a suicide letter directed at Card's son. Alongside the note, authorities found the suspect's cell phone.
Tension ratcheted up when Card's white Subaru Outback was found abandoned near a boat ramp in Lisbon, which is adjacent to the Androscoggin River. This discovery prompted speculation given Card's known ownership of jet-skis and a recreational boat. "I'm not saying the suspect is definitely in the water," Sauschuk clarified.
The scene of the shooting, typically serene New England towns, has been transformed into areas of heightened security and alert. Residents of Lewiston, Bowdoin, Lisbon, and Auburn have been advised to remain in their homes, leading to an eeriness as streets lie vacant with only the presence of armed officers at various junctures.
To further assist in the search, hundreds of FBI agents and other federal law enforcement personnel have converged in Maine. "There are many, many moving parts and coordination of efforts involved between multiple agencies," stated Lewiston Police Chief David St Pierre, asking for the community's patience.
In a bid to prevent Card from possibly fleeing the state, Canadian border guards and police in neighboring states are also on high alert.
Meanwhile, a law enforcement source has disclosed that a rifle was discovered in the abandoned Subaru Outback. This, combined with the cell phone retrieved from Card's residence, might offer more clues as the manhunt intensifies.
As the search continues, community members are anxiously awaiting updates, with hopes for a swift resolution.
