NASA will be flying past Pluto for the first time, sending back its very close images back to Earth and the public will be asked to help name the features of the distant planet, The Times reported.
The SETI institute has launched a campaign which they are calling as "My Pluto" campaign and urge the general public to take part in one of its kind event. The institute said that this planet belongs to everyone and hence, everyone should get a chance to name its many features, and also the features of Pluto's moon, Charon.
PHYS also reported that the team of scientists is inviting the common public to join the forces and sign up at the website ourpluto.seti.org at which they can use a voting system to vote for the people who they thing suit best to do such a big task of naming a planet's features. You can also suggest some additional names and those names will be put up against voting on the website.
But there is a catch, the name cannot be just any name. It has to comply with the the broad categories which has been issued by the institute, history of exploration, literature of exploration and the mythology of the underworld.
The founder of the planet himself, Clyde Tombaugh, has been nominated and put up on the ballet at this website; you can go and vote for him if you feel he is the best choice for this task.
Scientists say that this is a very big milestone for NASA. To fly past Pluto and its moon and will always be remembered as a historical moment in the history of astronomy and physical science.
