Amanda Knox was brought to tears when she was acquitted after a legal drama that involved the United States, Britain and Italy for eight years. The 27-year-old was tearful now that has her life back.
According to Knox's Italian lawyer Carlo Dalla Vedova, when he called her to deliver the news about Italy's Supreme Court overturning her murder conviction, she "was crying because she was so happy," USA Today reported.
Surrounded by family, Knox delivered a short statement on March 27, Friday.
"You saved my life," Knox tearfully said. "I'm so grateful to have my life back."
When the decision was announced in Rome, Knox was in the United States and issued a statement saying the news made her "relieved and grateful." According to her mother, Edda Mallas, the family needed "time to digest" the news.
Moreover, Knox said that Meredith Kercher was her friend. In November 2007, the 21-year-old British student was found dead with her throat slashed in the apartment she shared with Knox, who was prosecuted thereafter.
Knox's Italian boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, who was also convicted for Kercher's death, was cleared along with Knox, as well.
For Knox, Kercher "deserved so much in this life."
"I'm the lucky one," said Knox, who had been facing 28.5 years in prison.
For about four years, Knox and Sollecito in Italian prisons but in October 2011an appeals court quashed their convictions due to a lack of evidence against them, according to CNN.
In a statement, Knox said, "The knowledge of my innocence has given me strength in the darkest times of this ordeal. And throughout this ordeal, I have received invaluable support from family, friends and strangers."
