Being an actor in the "Fast and Furious" franchise is risky with all the stunts but being a car in the movie is deadly. Dennis McCarthy, the man who designs all those gorgeous cars, admitted that they destroyed at least hundred cars during the shoot.
Cars play an important role in the movie because they are the ones that keep the franchise fresh with every release. McCarthy was a custom car designer in Burbank who got the opportunity to stylize the vehicles for "Tokyo Drift". Ever since then, he has been handling the job with this team of 70 members.
When he goes shopping with his team members, the stuff they buy could easily make a car fan drool. On their first visit, they purchased some high performance vehicles including Skyline GT-R, Nissan 350z, Sylvia and almost every other car that are worthy of being in the movie.
"We brought at least 300 cars or maybe 350. I don't remember exactly because it's tough to keep count. And, we wrecked hundreds of them," admitted McCarthy, as reported by Cnet.
Even though, there were so many in the team, they had only three months to get them ready for "Fast and Furious 7" that some of the cars had to go to the sets, with the paints still wet.
The designer also clarified that they had to use hundreds of cars because the same cars appears in multiple scenes and sometimes after demanding stunt sequences. It is not practically possible to use the same vehicle. Besides, they always keep backup cars in case the original ones don't work on the sets. He adds that six different Subaru WRXs with six Jeeps, Camaros as well as eight Dodge Chargers and Challengers were used, a total of 34 cars for the plane drop scene.
"Furious 7" is a movie in the franchise that relies more on actual stunts and very less on CGI, he confirms. For that particular scene, the team actually dropped stunt cars out of the plane with a parachute tied to the back, McCarthy told in an interview with The Verge. They lost a couple of cars but most of them landed safely.
"Furious 7" launches in cinemas on April. 3.
