The First Lady stated to the crowd that they are beautiful no matter where they come from and even her husband, the President of the United States of America, is proud of them. The crowd consisted of many young colored girls, according to Dawn.

The First Lady was the most celebrated and distinguished participant in the event. Dressed in a form-fitting white dress, she jammed along to performances of artists likes Badu, Fantasia, Sheila E!, Estelle and applauded and praised the honorees.

The event honored the likes of Jada Pinkett Smith, Erykah Badu, Cicely Tyson, Ava DuVernay, Nadia Lopez and Helene Gayle.

The First Lady received the night's loudest ovations as she came on stage and declared "Black girls rock!" The name of the organization and the slogan has been coined by Beverly Bond. The organization came into existence for the upliftment of young black girls and women. The reason for this organization's existence is because very often coloured women have faced a lot of difficulty with progress and finding the positive aspects of life. It helps them reaffirm their images of themselves and to establish themselves as an active part of the world.

In the end, the First Lady asked women present at the event to ignore the negativity and discouraging voices around them and to pursue education properly since it is the key to success.
