A 6-inch Sony Xperia Z4 phablet is rumored to be released this year aims to pick up the down-spiraling sales of the company's mobile arm.

The Japan-based company held back last Mobile World Congress from launching a new smartphone. Taiwanese media website DigiTimes cited unnamed sources claiming that the Sony's partners have begun developing 6-inch smartphones for Sony Mobile. The handset is part of the company's strategy in catering more to mid-range and high-end segments of the market. The report added that the company will let go of its entry level handsets. Sony is aiming to sell 38 million smartphones by March 2016.

Although the report did not specify the name of the smartphone, it is speculated that the 6-inch handset is the successor of Sony Xperia Z Ultra. However, there are also speculations that the 6-inch tablet-smartphone hybrid is a variant of Sony Xperia Z4, according to tech website WCCF Tech.

Meanwhile, rumors claimed that Sony Xperia Z4 and others mobile devices of the company will be announced in September at the annual IFA tech event in Berlin. If rumors proved to be true, the phablet will battle head on with other devices such as Apple's iPhone Plus and Samsung's Galaxy Note.

The Sony Xperia Z4 is rumored to pack 5 inch screen display with 2K pixel resolution, octa core Snapdragon 810 processor paired with Adreno 420 GPU, 4 GB of RAM, and 24 MP rear camera and 12 MP front-facing camera. The smartphone is also rumored to include unique Sony features such as PlayStation Remote Play and IP68 certification for water and dust resistance.
