Google X, the secretive research and development arm of Google, has reportedly tapped the service of a former Apple battery expert in order to head its own development team.
Indeed, the race to produce the most efficient battery for future devices has taken a very interesting turn after Google dedicated a special team in order to develop its own battery technology, according to the Wall Street Journal.
According to Engadget, Ramesh Bhardwaj, the former Apple employee, was contacted by Google to head a team that would test and batteries manufactured by other companies in order to be integrated into Google products. The team's research might have caught the attention of Google's top executives and after a year they are already developing their own battery technology instead of relying on products coming from external companies.
Additional report indicate that the team is only composed of four members. Aside from Bhardwaj, the identity of the other three employees has been successfully kept hidden by Google.
Many analysts pointed that Google's interest in developing its own battery technology may have started from the fact that the company wants to control its own hardware supplies instead of relying on third-party companies. Another rumor said that the latest battery technology from Google will not only power future Google devices but will also be at the very heart of one of its most audacious projects to date, the much-hyped Google Driverless Car.
Aside from the Google Car, another project that could greatly benefit from this is the Google Glass. During its early developmental stage, the Google Glass received mostly negative remarks due to its very limited battery life. Another unnamed project that looks to integrate Google's newest battery technology is rumored to be a "smart contact lens" which has the ability to measure its user's sugar level and could prove to be very useful to users suffering from diabetes.
