Recently, Sony and Marvel have released a shortlist of five contenders for the role of Marvel's "Spider-Man." Among the five actors, it has been rumored that Asa Butterfield is the top choice to play the role of the web-slinger.

"Hugo" star Butterfiled is leading among the group, as per Latino Review.

The reps of the 18-year old actor have been contacted, but gave no comment. There were sources who gave confirmation that Butterfield is the top pick among the five actors and one source said that Marvel had liked the actor "since day one." The actor was also previously reported to have the biggest name among the list.

Marvel and Sony selects the next "Spider-Man" among "The Killing" star Liam James, "Interstellar" actor Timothée Chalament, "The Impossible" actor Tim Holland, "The Fault in Our Stars" actor Nat Wolff, and "Ender's Game" star Butterfield.

It is not hard to apprehend why Marvel would eye on Butterfield as the new incarnation of "Spider-Man," according to Cinema Blend. The 18-year old actor suits the role of a high school "Spider-Man," or even younger for his age.

Aside from being a contender as the titular hero, Butterfield is also set to appear in Tim Burton's "Peregrine's Home for Peculiars" next year.

"Spider-Man" will be needed on set for the filming of Joe and Anthony Russo's "Captain America: Civil War," starring Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Chadwick Boseman, Elizabeth Olsen, and Daniel Bruhl.

"Civil War" opens the curtain to the wall crawler's debut to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
