"Gotham" Season 1 Episode 22 is the final episode of the show's freshman year on FOX. This DC Comics universe adaptation developed by Bruno Heller successfully took its characters for one heck of a ride since the pilot. Just as darker and bigger villains emerge, the young Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) discovers his father's batcave. (UPDATE: Bruno Heller said the secret spot is only an "office.")

Spoiler alert: This feature recaps and reviews the highlights of the "Gotham" Season 1 finale. Read on at your own risk.

In the "Gotham" Season 1 finale, Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith) returns to Gotham after surviving the underworld operations of a human organ business. She kills Sal Maroni (David Zayas), then Oswald Cobblepot aka Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) gets to her. Thrilled, Penguin announces: "I'm the king of Gotham!"

Zayas was masterful in breathing life into a moody but powerful mob leader. Still, Maroni's death is called for; old leaders must fall for new ones to play the game. In Carmine Falcone's (John Doman) case, he gets out of the game alive and gets to officially pass the torch to Detective Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie).

Penguin and Gordon's dynamic is about to get darker. Gordon has always looked at Cobblepot as a Gotham nuisance. Now it seems Gordon himself is ready to be a big nuisance in order to manage his city.  Gordon is not exactly the new Falcone; he is taking Falcone's throne and making something better of it - hoping he can change things.

Other emerging villains are Selina "Cat" Kyle (Camren Bicondova), Edward Nygma (Cory Michael Smith) and Barbara Kean (Erin Richards). Selina killed Reggie Payne (David O'Hara), Nygma butchered Kristen Kringle's (Chelsea Spack) beau, and Barbara cut her parents' throats. They have all been broken, almost simultaneously. Now they're all ready for more Gotham trouble.

"Gotham" Season 1 Episode 22 is a quick look into Season 2. Jim Gordon and Bruce Wayne -- aka the future Batman -- were in separate paths for most of Season 1, but what they've encountered in their own quests are bound to cross.
