Besides Xbox One being the top video game system in April, U.S. video game sales also saw an uptick of 3 percent from $579.5 million to $595.7 million, according to Inferse. The total sales since launch are 22 million for the Sony PS4, and 12 million for the Microsoft Xbox One.

The market research company NPD wrote that PlayStation topped software sales for April 2015, and PS4 is the U.S. leader in total sales. Hardware sales also decreased in April, from $191.9 million to $183.9 million, according to Venture Beat.

The decrease in the sales revenue for video game hardware was due to a 4 percent drop in average price. However, the unit sales of game consoles actually increased a significant 12 percent.

In addition, gamers bought new video games with the money they saved on new video game consoles in April.  That total rose to $256.7 million for the month, up 13 percent in year-over-year revenue.

Xbox One's price tag was slashed to $350 in January. Meanwhile, PS4's retail price remains unchanged at $400.

The latest U.S. video game sales totals were released one month before the yearly Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3). This yearly trade fair will take place from June 16-18 in Los Angeles, California.
