"Grey's Anatomy" is set to premiere its 12th season in the next few months and multiple sources are now suggesting that Katherine Heigl could return to reprise her role as Izzie. However, the only person blocking this from actually happening is show creator Shonda Rhimes.

In previous seasons, Heigl played the role of Justin Chamber's character Alex's onscreen partner. However, her stint on "Grey's Anatomy" was cut short after reports circulated that show creator Shonda Rhimes axed her due to her diva behavior.

Now, Rhimes also axed one of her most popular cast members on the show, Patrick Dempsey, heightening speculations that Heigl could return and take his place.

According to TV Line, now is the best time for Heigl to return to "Grey's Anatomy" because her other series, "State of Affairs" was cancelled just after one season.

With this, the publication suggests that if Heigl is not tied with any project, it would be best for her to finish her storyline on "Grey's Anatomy," either as a cast regular or simply as a guest star.

Unfortunately, it seems that Heigl could never return to the hit ABC series because Rhimes already made it clear in the past that she does not want to work with her anymore.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Rhimes said that she hates Heigl's guts and said that she doesn't have time to deal with the actress.

However, Heigl previously said that if she will be given another chance, she wants to be able to prove Rhimes wrong.

Do you think Heigl should reprise her role as Izzie on "Grey's Anatomy?"

"Grey's Anatomy" season 12 will premiere on ABC in the fall.
