When Nvidia launched the GeForce GTX Titan X in March, many were expecting that the video card manufacturer will also release a less expensive version of the video card. In less than two months after the release of Titan X, Nvidia officially unveiled the Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 Ti.

Not to be confused with the GeForce GTX 980 which was launched in September 2014, the GeForce GTX 980 Ti is more of a run-down version of the GTX Titan X.

The GTX 980 Ti uses the same GM200 graphic chip installed in the Titan X. Considering the official specs sheet released by Nvidia, the GTX 980 Ti has the same base and boost clock speed as the Titan X, according to Tech Report.

One of the most notable reduction made by Nvidia in the new GTX 980 Ti is the reduced shader multiprocessor units, the Titan X has 24 activated shaders while the GTX 980 Ti only has 22. The GTX 980 Ti's onboard memory was also downgraded to 6 gigabyte GDDR5 compared to the Titan X which has a massive 12 gigabyte of memory.

Apart from the two reductions, not much was changed to the GTX 980 Ti's specs. Both the Titan X and the GTX 980 Ti use the same Maxwell 2 architecture. Both video cards also have 384-bit memory bus width and were manufactured using the TSMC 28nm process technology.

However, the best part of the GTX 980 Ti is not on its hardware but on its price range. The Titan X was initially launched at $1000 while the newer GTX 980 Ti will be released on the market for only $650, according to PC Gamer.
