"Ghostbusters 3" is confirmed to have an all-female cast led by "Spy" star Melissa McCarthy, "Despicable Me 2" voice talent Kristen Wiig and "Saturday Night Live" stars Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones. Following this report, director Paul Feig explained why he decided to create an all-female version of the hit movie.
According to Crossmap, Feig previously clarified that "Ghostbusters 3" is not a sequel to the first two installments, "Ghostbuster" and "Ghostbuster 2." Rather, the third film is classified as a reboot.
As a spinoff, "Ghostbusters 3" should be viewed by audiences as a different version of "Ghostbusters" and Feig believes that classifying the movie as such could avoid comparison and conflict among the three films.
Meanwhile, there have been reports that Feig initially did not want to direct "Ghostbusters 3" because he was not excited about it. What pushed him to finally say yes to the project was the fact that he could work with four female lead roles.
In an interview with The Guardian, Feig said that he kept turning down the project because, at first, he did not know how to make the story work. However, when he learned that there will be four female lead stars, he immediately knew that he could make "Ghostbusters 3" funny and interesting for fans.
Additionally, Feig revealed that he will make "Ghostbuster 3" scarier as well and he hinted that it what Bill Murray wants him to do.
"Ghostbusters 3" is slated for release in the United States on July 22, 2016.
