Walt Disney Pictures has given a green light to the much awaited third sequel of the hit flick, "Princess Diaries." Recent reports state that the studio is going ahead with "Princess Diaries 3," which is likely to have a mystery plot.

However, it is still unknown whether the original princess, Anne Hathaway, will reprise her role in the third installment or not. Although rumors were circulating for quite long about the possibility of the 2001 hit flick's third sequel, the "The Dark Knight Rises" star had always denied the same.

Now, it is confirmed that the studio is adamant to come up with "Princess Diaries 3," with or without the 32-year-old actress. Although the studio is keeping the plot of the upcoming sequel strictly under the wraps, a few inside sources confirmed to Tracking Board that the Disney's upcoming project is rather a reboot of the original movie with a mystery twist.

After serving as the producer of the "Princess Diaries" and "Princess Diaries 2," Debra Chase of Martin Chase Productions is returning to produce the third installment. Kristin Blurr and Foster Driver are likely to oversee the project on Disney's behalf.

The director of the upcoming installment of the successful teen romantic comedy is not yet decided.

The original movie, based on the novel by the same name by Meg Cabot, was the story of Mia Thermopolis, a teenager, who discovers that she is the heir to the throne of the fictional Kingdom of Genovia, ruled by her grandmother, played by Julie Andrews.

It has now emerged that Cabot has recently released a new book named "From the Notebooks of a Middle School Princess," which deals with the story of Hathaway's character's long lost half-sister, who was raised by her uncle and was kept in the dark about her royal lineage, Mashable reported. It seems that the third installment of the teen movie is loosely based on the recently released Cabot's novel.
