Sony announced that it will release an Android M developer preview version for some of the company's Xperia devices. Sony's developer version operating system will give developers an open environment in order to create and test apps and games for the upcoming Android M.

According to CNet, Sony became the first hardware manufacturer to offer the next generation Android operating system to a non-Nexus model. The company even beat dominant Android hardware manufacturers like Samsung, Motorola and HTC.

According to the official list provided by Sony, the Android M developer version will be release to 12 smartphones and tablets models. These include Xperia S, Xperia, L, Xperia T3, Xperia T2 Ultra, Xperia M2, Xperia E3, Xperia Table Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia Z, Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1 Compact, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z2 Tablet, Xperia Z2, Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact, Xperia Z3 Compact and Xperia Z3.

Devices that are included in Sony's Open Device program can download and run the preview build of Android M. This version is not suitable for casual use; however, developers might find it important if they want to test apps.

An unlocked bootloader is needed in order to run the Android M developer preview version on supported Sony devices.

Sony also announced that it will release the binaries for the Android M operating system. Binaries are driver packages that allow the device's key hardware components work in sync with the software. However, Sony has yet to provide drivers for its device's camera and cellular modem.

Android M is expected to be officially released in fall. The operating system's official moniker has yet to be revealed with potential suggestions ranging from Marshmallow, Muffin, Marmalade and Macadamia Nut Cookie.
