According to The Wrap, many fans have started doubting the matching process of the show given that none of the couples this season stayed together. One of the season 2 cast members even filed a restraining order against her estranged husband. Castro claimed that De Nino threatened to kill her and her family after she found out that he has been cheating on her with a lesbian. Because of this, some perceived that the selection process of the reality series were not stringent enough.

In an interview with People, Kinetic Content CEO Chris Coelen defended the process of matching couples in "Married at First Sight." He explained that an "advanced casting team" was deployed in several areas in search for willing and suitable candidates to take part in the social experiment. He added that they also go through dating websites such as Tinder, Match.com and OkCupid apart from going to several clubs and bars. The chosen candidates also reportedly go through several background checks and psychological evaluations to ensure that they will be able to handle the stress of being part of the series.

Coelen also mentioned that although they could not guarantee that all of the three couples will end up together, the pairing was based on a high level of research to ensure that each cast is presented with the best candidate. He said they have been very transparent since the beginning of the selection process. He added that each of the contestants were aware of the repercussions of marrying a complete stranger.
