With Kyle Balda and Pierre Coffin's "Minions" release in some of its international market, it has been reported that the animated comedy spin-off has been performing well in the global box office.
After its initial release on June 17 in Indonesia, "Minions" has got an estimated international gross of $124 million. According to Variety, the Illumination Entertainment film had its biggest opening days in Argentina, Columbia, Germany, and Spain.
Previously, the "Despicable Me" spin-off topped the United Kingdom box office with its $18,2 million estimated gross, beating Colin Trevorrow's "Jurassic World." "Minions" has also beat Lee Unkrich's 2010 animated film "Toy Story 3," which had $18 million in U.K.'s box office five years ago.
At this point, Australia stands as the top "Minions" market, with $15 million in two weeks.
While some see the film as falling flat, most critics delight in the third installment, according to Cinema Blend. Along with the studios marketing with toys and other merchandise, the popularity of the "Despicable Me" franchise has helped the spin-off boost its performance in the box office, not to mention that it has not been released domestically.
Balda and Coffin's "Minions" stands as a prequel of the "Despicable Me" franchise. The first "Despicable Me" film had its debut on July 9, 2010 and has got an estimated global gross of $543 million. "Despicable Me 2" followed and was released on July 3, 2013, making an estimated global gross of $971 million.
"Minions" follows the small lovable yellow creatures as they go across history in pursuit of their despicable master. It features the voices of Coffin, Sandra Bullock, and Jon Hamm, among others.
