Without Nina Dobrev, "The Vampire Diaries" season 7 filming has just started and its lead actor Ian Somerhalder has managed to spend time with his work with Dawn Wildlife and the International Bird Rescue (IBR).

On July 19, Thursday, Somerhalder told The Wrap that they recently released a seagull and three pelicans on the beach in San Pedro, Calif., back into the wild, an experience he described to as "so emotional and so cool."

"You don't realize how big they are until they flap their wings in front of you and they take off," Somerhalder said about his participation in spending time with birds and celebrating the effort volunteers exert to save marine animals.

In cooperation with Dawn Wildlife, the IBR released a video series titled "We All Love Wildlife." During the debut of the video series in San Pedro, Calif., Somerhalder also talked about his wife Nikki Reed and her love of animals.

"The amount of compassion fueled by passion that she puts into the world in regards to animals is second to none," Us Weekly quoted Somerhalder as saying about Reed.

Somerhalder revealed that Reed "changes her house into a rescue and a foster home for so many animals and has taken so much time and energy and money of her own with her family, particularly her mom, to foster animals and make sure that they are safe."

"That in and of itself is really something that solidifies us as a unit that really is an amazing thing to wake up to every morning," Somerhalder added.
