A new recall order was recently announced by Fiat Chrysler due to the defective airbags manufactured by Japanese company Takata. The new recall order from Fiat Chrysler will affect more than 88,000 Dodge Challengers.
According to Bloomberg, the recall will cover Dodge Challengers manufactured from September 2007 up to October 2010. The new recall will put Fiat Chrysler's total affected vehicle to about 2.1 million in the United States and 5.3 million worldwide.
The recall was posted on the official website of the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) after a series of investigation. The recall order states that it will cover Dodge Challenger models 2008 up to 2010.
NHTSA administrator Mark Rosekind said that he is considering the possibility of issuing a fine over Fiat Chrysler's delayed recalls of its affected vehicles. The Dodge Challenger airbag problem was initially detected in May.
The Takata airbag problem was first discovered in 2013. Airbags on affected cars are prone to moisture intrusion which in turn could cause the airbag to explode and spray metal fragments which could injure those inside the vehicle.
The shrapnel from the airbag explosion could lead to bruises and burns on both the driver and its passengers. More than 100 injuries were reported worldwide due to the defect and it has claimed the lives of at least eight people.
Eleven major car manufacturers including Ford, BMW, Honda, Toyota, Mazda and Nissan has recalled a total of 57.5 million cars worldwide due to the defect.
In May, Fiat Chrysler issued a recall order for several vehicle models manufactured between 2004 and 2011.
