‘Minions’: Director Pierre Coffin Talks Why Minions Are All Males

With Kyle Balda and Pierre Coffin's "Minions" showing in theaters, co-director Coffin has revealed the reason why the titular characters are all males.

In his interview with The Wrap prior the release of the animated comedy film, Coffin said that he and the production team decided to have the tiny adorable yellow creatures as all boys because of their dumb nature. The co-director added that he could not envision the Minions being feminine.

While most Minions do not have highly intellectual way of thinking, Coffin also divulged some trivia on how he and his team derived the names of the three outstanding members of the yellow creatures - Kevin, Stuart, and Bob.

According to Coffin, Kevin emanates from an ancient Greek word, "Kevinos," which means "leader." Next is the name Stuart derives from the Latin word "Stuartalumni," which is roughly translated as "the one who lacks. Then, there is Bob, which is short for Robert.

With the Minions known to be a single-sex environment, their population and length of survival still remains mysterious, as per Cinema Blend. The scientific concepts of reproduction and division as ways to boost population have been excluded by Coffin and his team. Some fans theorized that Minions may have been cloned while some think that humans have been turned into Minions via a "Minionizer."

After its release on July 10, "Minions" has grossed $614 million globally, which made it recognized as the fourth most successful movie of the year. It follows Colin Trevorrow's "Jurassic World," James Wan's "Fast and Furious 7," and Joss Whedon's "The Avengers: Age of Ultron."

Starring the voices of Sandra Bullock as Scarlett Overkill, Jon Hamm as Herb Overkill, and Coffin as the iconic funny yellow creatures, "Minions" is still showing in theaters.
