Michael Schumacher, one of the greatest Formula One drivers in history, is currently fighting the "toughest race" of his life, according to former Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo said.

Earlier this week, Montemozolo was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame and he dedicated his award to Schumacher, according to Christian Today.

"I don't know if I could have received this award without him, it is dedicated to him because he is trying to win his toughest race," the publication quoted Montemozolo as saying.

The Formula One driver had his tragic skiing accident in 2013. Since then he stayed in a comatose condition and then moved to a rehab in Lausanne, Switzerland. In September, he was transferred into a medical suite built in his mansion and was imposed a total news blackout.

Schumacher's manager, Sabine Kehm, said that the F1 star is making a progress, but people must keep in mind the seriousness of his head injuries. It was reported that Schumacher's family is facing financial difficulties on his rehabilitation. It was revealed in February that his Norwegian mountain home has been sold for over $3.1 to be able to use on his rehabilitation.

Schumacher's website has now 195 messages. Montemozolo had also joined his fan's website to show his full support.

According to Latinos Health, Schumacher had an emergency surgery in  2013 due to cranial trauma. Since then, he was reportedly been awakened from the coma. The F1 racer's family also had requested for a media blackout since April 2014.

In 1992, Montezemolo credited Schumacher for saving Ferrari when it was forced to be closed. Schumacher had been Ferrari's racer from 1996 to 2006 and had been the brand's consultant for two years.
