The Chinese remake of the Hollywood romantic comedy "Bride Wars" is scheduled for release in domestic theaters on Aug. 20, the same day as the Qixi Festival, the Chinese equivalent of Valentine's Day.

Directed by Tony Chan, the romantic comedy stars Hong Kong-based actress Angelababy and mainland actress Ni Ni as best friends who both dream of having their dream wedding, only to run into trouble when their weddings are accidentally scheduled on the same day in the same place.

The original film, directed by Gary Winick, was released in 2009 and starred Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway. Hudson's role will be played by Nini, while Hathaway's will be played by Angelababy.

Tony Chan's directing credits include comedy films like "Hot Summer Days" in 2010 and "Love in Space" in 2011, as well as the award-winning "Combination Platter" back in 1993.

The film is produced by Fox International and Bona. Bona will also be the film's domestic distributor, while Fox International will distribute it worldwide.

The film is one of many Chinese film remakes of Hollywood films that have been produced recently.

Xu Ang's Legal drama "12 Citizens" is inspired by the 1957 American classic "12 Angry Men." Xu's film won the highest honor at the conclusion of the Rome Film Festival last December.

"Bride Wars" follows the trend of romantic films being screened during the Qixi Festival to take advantage of couples looking to watch a movie as part of their celebration.

In 2014, romantic fantasy "The White Haired Witch of Lunar Kingdom," starring Huang Xiongming and Fan Bingbing, also took advantage of the Qixi Festival. In the same year, romantic comedy "Girls," by Hong Kong director Barbara Wong, also benefitted from screening during the festival.
