Halloween is still a couple of months away, but a single costume managed to create a huge uproar in social media on Aug. 24, Monday, when some online retailers started offering a Caitlyn Jenner costume.

The costume retailer Spirit Halloween reportedly posted a costume in the form of a wig, padded bustier, shorts and a sash, saying "Call Me Caitlyn," which is exactly similar to the one worn by Jenner when she appeared on the cover of the fashion magazine Vanity Fair and revealed her transgender identity for the first time. The costume is being offered at the price tag of $74.99 with the slogan, "So much fun it's scary!"

The same costume is also available at Anytimeconstumes.com and WholesaleHolloweenCostumes.com at $49.95.

The sale of such a costume has triggered an online uproar where in the commentators condemned the seller and buyers of such a piece by calling them "transphobic" and "disgusting."  Tweeters called for boycott of the costume and even started a petition to ban the Caitlyn Jenner-costume.

"A petition has been launched to pull this @Caitlyn_Jenner Halloween costume from shops: http://bit.ly/1Eg2CBc  " tweeted an online member. Several transgender support groups also expressed their disgust over the sale of such a costume.

"There's no tasteful way to 'celebrate' Caitlyn Jenner or respect transgender people this way on the one night of the year when people use their most twisted imaginations to pretend to be villains and monsters," USA Today quoted National Center for Transgender Equality spokesman Vincent Villano, as saying.

On the other hand, the online retailer has come out in defence, saying that their costume is often based upon celebrities, public figures, heroes and superheroes like those of Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry, KISS band members and Marilyn Monroe.

"We feel that Caitlyn Jenner is all of the above and that she should be celebrated," CNBC quoted Spirit Halloween senior director of marketing Lisa Barr as saying.
