Director Joss Whedon has revealed the reason behind the inclusion of Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver in his "Avengers: Age of Ultron."

In his interview with USA Today, Whedon said that he chose the twin characters to be part of his film to integrate an innovative visual language, which involves Scarlet Witch's ability to manipulate the Avengers' minds and Quicksilver's speed that makes everything slow. The director added that such filmic language was something he would not have used the first "The Avengers" film.

Elizabeth Olsen, who played Scarlet Witch, also told USA Today that she was challenged when she filmed with James Spader, who played titular villain Ultron in Whedon's film. Olsen also mentioned that Spader has an antenna-like object with red dots, which served as Ultron's eyes. She added that she had to look three feet above Spader's head, which she found annoying.

While Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, and Ultron have factored in to the development of Marvel's Phase Two, the first "The Avengers" film remained superior than Whedon's "Avengers: Age of Ultron," as per Cinema Blend. However, with Marvel going to its Phase Three, it is assumed that the studio's Phase Three films will improve the studio's performance in its Cinematic Universe.

For now, fans will see Earth's Mightiest Superheroes in Joe Russo and Anthony Russo's upcoming duology "Avengers: Infinity War," which is assumed as one of Marvel's superhero-packed films.

"Avengers: Infinity War - Part I" is slated to hit theaters on May 4, 2018 while "Avengers: Infinity War - Part II" is set to premiere on May 3, 2019.
