The iPhone 4 from 2010 featured rear camera of 5 MP. In 2011, the Cupertino company released the iPhone 4S with an upgraded camera of 8 MP with support for full HD video recording. The iPhone 5 from 2012 retained the rear camera sensor of the iPhone 4S.

The iPhone 5S as well as the iPhone 5C from 2013 again came with 8 MP cameras. In 2014, the iPhone 6 was launched with MP shooter and the same camera on the iPhone 6 came with support for Optical Image Stabilization (OIS), Phone Arena reported. Now, after four years, Apple has increased the number of megapixels on the next generation iPhones.

Another major camera enhancement that will arrive on the iPhone 6S and the iPhone 6S Plus is that for the first time Apple will be introducing support for 4K resolution video recording. Samsung had introduced 4K video shooting in 2014 with the arrival of Galaxy S5. The 12 MP cameras will carry support for OIS. However, it is not known whether the iPhone 6S camera will be available with OIS support.

Motorola is the only mainstream smartphone brand to offer front-facing flash on a flagship smartphone. The new Moto X Style comes with front-facing flash for its selfie camera. Apple is also set to offer flash for its front-facing cameras of the iPhone 6S and the iPhone 6S Plus. However, both the handsets will not be fitted with a conventional LED flash. Instead, the handsets will light up white screen as camera flash when the front camera shutter button is pressed.

Apple has already sent media invitations for the unveil event on Sept. 9 its next generation smartphones. Speculations indicate that a 4-inch iPhone 6C is also slated for an announcement on the same day.
