This is a concern that inspired government hospitals to offer free abortions to college students. Others are worried that this may encourage more casual sex among teenagers, whereas others consider that young people need reasonable medical support when facing unexpected pregnancies.
The deputy of the Beijing Municipal People's Congress, Wei Aimin, suggests that the government hospitals should offer the service free of charge or for a more reasonable fee, he also said that the slogans should be used for media advertisements, mainly in spring holidays, and at the end of winter.
According to Wei, the slogans used for media ads, particularly at the end of winter and spring holidays - the time when the number of students seeking abortions increases nationwide - falsely sell the procedure as a "pain-free" solution. A number of private clinics are also not qualified to safely carry out the procedure.
Some claim that the teenagers who get pregnant by accident are so scared of their guardians or parents, that they are going to these private clinics. The fact that many of them are not licensed may cause a high risk of complications from the process. It has severe effects on students' mental and physical health.
But criticizers, particularly guardians and parents, have stated worries about the proposal. They said that if that proposal is allowed, it may inspire young people to have more casual sex.
According to Peng Jiahui, a supporter of Wei's suggestion and also a professor of sexology at CCNU (Central China Normal University), sex education should begin from their junior high school, while sexology should be a required course for all students at the university.
