Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, 31, has nothing but good words about Oculus CTO John Carmack, 45. For the billionaire computer programmer and internet entrepreneur, the game programmer and Id Software co-founder is legendary.

"Talking backstage with the legendary John Carmack," Zuckerberg captioned a Facebook photo of himself and the Oculus CTO, which he posted on Sept. 24, Thursday, during the Oculus Connect 2 Developers Conference 2015 in Hollywood.

It was unveiled during the conference that Facebook's virtual reality platform will bring the technology to the mainstream with its lower-cost hardware and numerous media partnerships. Samsung Senior Vice President of Technology Strategy, Mobile Communications Division Peter Koo announced the Samsung Gear VR's first consumer version.

In the first quarter of 2016, hard-core gamers will welcome the Oculus Rift launched for use with PCs. However, a new version of the Samsung Gear VR will be on sale for $99 in November, which is half the price of the headset in 2014, CNBC has learned.

The Samsung Gear VR is the first virtual reality headset extensively available to consumers. Among the mobile devices it works with are Samsung's newly released Galaxy s6 and Note 5.

During the Oculus' developer conference, Oculus CEO Brendan Iribe announced that the experience for Oculus Video users will not be a lot better that it was before. Users will not get to experience swimming with sharks and watching Amy Schumer's "Trainwreck" co-star and NBA star Lebron James prepare for a game.

"With mobile VR, you only need a great mobile game device and a smartphone," CNET quoted Iribe as saying.
