The 1980's action TV series "MacGyver" has finally received the green light for revival on CBS with "Furious 7" director James Wan at the helm.

Production will be in active development from after several years of trying to get the series off the ground.

The new "MacGyver" series puts the spotlight on a 20-something year old MacGyver who was employed by a secret organization where he utilizes his special problem-solving skills to avert disasters before they happen.

Wan is coming off the global blockbuster movie "Furious 7" that starred Vin Diesel and the late Paul Walker, who died before the movie finished production.

He was working to get a "MacGyver" movie back in 2009, a project that was announced by New Line Cinema but never got going. Instead, Wan had been preoccupied with "The Fast and the Furious" franchise until now.

"MacGyver" was a hit ABC TV series that enjoyed a successful run from 1985 to 1992, starring Richard Dean Anderson as the titular character.

It was brought back to life twice with made-for-TV movies during the mid-90's. Warner Bros. had ordered a "Young MacGyver" pilot episode back in 2003 but the network didn't order the entire series.

In 2010, the "MacGruber" parody series by Will Forte became so successful that it was turned into a movie.

"MacGyver" is one of many TV shows being revived years after their runs ended. The "A-Team," "Full House," "X-Files," "The Muppets," "Heroes," and "Prison Break," have already been revived for a new generation of viewers who will get a taste of previously successful shows looking to create new fanbases.
