The operating system giant Microsoft and chipmaker titan Intel are teaming up with PC manufacturers Dell, Hewlett-Packard, and Lenovo in a brand new ad campaign to promote the capabilities of today's personal computers. The "PC Does What?" slogan and promotion is scheduled to be unveiled on October 22, Thursday, and will target computer buyers via print, TV, and online advertisements, who might be considering tablets or smartphones.

The PC industry's advertising push will feature Microsoft's Windows 10 operating system, and Intel's sixth-gen Core processors. It will include several 16-second videos produced by Intel. In each of the situations people are impressed with PCs' capabilities and shout out in disbelief, "PC does what?" according to PC World.

Due to plummeting desktop and laptop sales, it is not surprising that the industry leaders are teaming up on an ad campaign. However, this is the first joint venture.

The campaign will be rolled out in the United States and China. Its objective is to inform consumers that they can do many other tasks besides those performed on the bulky machines they use at home and in offices.

In the past, Intel and Microsoft have subsidized advertising of the PC industry due to their bigger profit margins, according to Re/code. However, their own plugs were done independently of the desktop and laptop producers.

Microsoft and Intel will be funding most of the ad campaign's costs. However, Dell, HP, and Lenovo will also chip in some money.

Many shoppers are choosing not to upgrade their PCs. Intel reported that when it launched its latest chip family, about 500 million home computers on the market were at least five years old.

Today's consumers are often choosing to spend money on other electronic devices, such as tablets, smartphones, and televisions. International Data Corporation (IDC) forecasts that PC sales will drop over 8 percent in the next few years.

The PC, chip, and OS leaders have not announced the size of the project. However, one reliable source described it as a "sizeable" campaign that would be proportional to the $300 billion industry.

Apple has historically had some of the most effective ad campaigns in the PC industry. They include "1984," "Think Different," iPod People," and "Get a Mac."
