Julia Roberts' starrer 1997 hit, "My Best Friend's Wedding," is set to be adapted as a half-hour comical TV series to be aired on ABC.

Recent reports stated that the network has enrolled the original screenwriter Ron Bass, who is best known for penning down "Rain Man," to work on the script alongside Jessica Amento. The movie's original producer Jeryy Zucker and Janet Zucker will also be involved in the production of TV series along with executive producer Mike Menchel, The Hollywood Reporter reported.

However, the single-camera half-hour comedy is not likely to be a reboot of the movie. Rather the TV series will be a sequel and will pick up the story where it ended in the iconic movie.

ABC's upcoming series will show Julianne, originally played by Roberts, who has shifted to New York with best friend George, who was played by Rupert Everett in the movie, as her companion. Since the cast of the impending TV series is not yet declared, viewers are already excited to know who will play the iconic role of Julianne and George along with Cameron Diaz's Kimberley.

"My Best Friend's Wedding" was a huge hit and garnered $300 million worldwide with a budget of $38 million. With three Golden Globe nominations and one Academy Award nomination, the movie was appreciated worldwide and translated in several foreign languages too. A Chinese remake of the movie is also underway and will hit theatres in February 2016, TIME reported.

ABC is also set to develop a female-fronted take on "Fantasy Island" this season. Other networks are also not far behind with CBS developing a reboot of "Nancy Drew" and "Training Day" while Fox is working on a similar project on "Behind Enemy Lines."
