Dean Israelite's upcoming hero film "Power Rangers" has got its Black Ranger.
According to the photo in the "Power Rangers" official Instagram account, "The Shannon Entropy" actor Ludi Lin had been cast to play the Black Ranger. With the caption "The team is coming together! #LudiLin is morphing into the #BlackRanger in 2017 for the @PowerRangersMovie," the photo has got more than 2,800 likes and more than 300 comments.
Lin had topped "It Follows" actor Daniel Zovatto, "Chasing Life" star Ross Butler, and "Major Crimes" actor Brian "Sene" Marc, who had reportedly auditioned for the Black Ranger role.
According to Cinema Blend, Israelite's "Power Rangers" seemed to be in pursuit of casting unknown actors in it. While Lin had been part of Raman Hui's action fantasy film "Monster Hunt," which was the highest grossing Chinese film, he was unfamiliar to most moviegoers.
Aside from "Monster Hunt," Lin is also known for his role in Mackenzie Warner's mystery short film "The Shannon Entropy," Jonathan Rosenbaum's television drama "Holiday Spin," and Brian Cheung and Carlos McCallister's sci-fi film "Stasis."
Israelite's "Power Rangers" is set to pick up from the events in the most recent television series "Power Rangers Dino Charge," according to Comic Book Resources. The film's villain will be Scorpina, Rita Repulsa's cruel and threatening follower who is set to return to torment the titular team.
The 1993 "Might Morphin Power Rangers" followed a group of teenagers who can morph into superheroes who wear colored costumes tasked to fight monsters that threaten Earth, along with the giant robots called Zords. The Zords can be summoned to battle colossal aliens and they can also assemble themselves into a single fighting robot.
Along with Lin, "The Martian" actress Naomi Scott is set to play the Pink Ranger while "Betrand the Terrible" actor Dacre Montgomery will play the Red Ranger.
Aside from Israelite as the film's director, "X-Men: First Class" writers Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz are on board to pen the script of the upcoming "Power Rangers."
Israelite's new "Power Rangers" is slated to premiere in theaters in the United States on Jan. 13, 2017.
