Gwendoline Christie has revealed how she had fought for her role in J.J. Abrams' forthcoming space sci-fi film "Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens."

Christie is set to play the chrome-armored leader of the new faction of Stormtroopers, Captain Phasma, in Abrams' upcoming film. In her interview with Los Angeles Times, Christie said that she had actually wanted to be part of "Star Wars" because it had had a special meaning to her.

According to Christie, for someone who had always felt unusual and had never felt to be part of the mainstream, it had felt like a world that she could have inhabited in terms of her imagination and who she had been. For Christie, she had become like a dog with a bone and had been unequivocally resolute.

Phasma is set to be the first female villain in the "Star Wars" films, which Christie was very proud of. According to the actress, Phasma was like Boba Fett in terms of her role in the film narrative. The character's role is pivotal, while she is not the main character in the film, as per Cinema Blend.

"Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens" is set 30 years after the events in the "Return of Jedi." It stars an ensemble of both old and new heroes and villains played by Oscar Isaac, Hamill, Max von Sydow, Simon Pegg, Daisy Ridley, Domhnall Gleeson, John Boyega, Adam Driver, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford, among others.

Abrams' "Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens" hits theaters on Dec. 18 while Gareth Edwards's "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" premieres on Dec. 16, 2016. Meanwhile, Johnson's "Star Wars: Episode VIII" is slated to premiere in theaters on May 26, 2017 while Colin Trevorrow's "Star Wars: Episode IX" premieres in 2019.
