According to China.com.cn, Zuckerberg bought several copies of the Chinese president's book "The Governance of China" so that he and his colleagues could learn and understand "socialism with Chinese characteristics."

State-owned China.com.cn said that the photo was captured at the social media network's Menlo Park office and that President Xi's book was placed on Zuckerberg's workstation while he was hosting Lu Wei, a top Chinese Internet regulator.

Zuckerberg said that he purchased several copies of the book for his colleagues.

"I want them to understand socialism with Chinese characteristics," said the Facebook CEO.

Lu attended a U.S. conference regarding the management of the Internet, which China is pushing to be discussed more. The country is also siding with the idea of "information sovereignty."

In October, the Facebook CEO paid a visit to Chinese college students in China's capital Beijing, where he surprised the students by chatting with them in Mandarin for half an hour.

China.com.cn, operating under the country's Internet Information Office and another state agency, reported that Zuckerberg also used Mandarin when he gave Lu a tour of his office.
