BMW, one of the largest automobile giants announced on Dec. 22, Monday their nationwide total recall of all their vehicles that is built with driver side air bag inflators made by Takata Corporation. The recall is a widespread search following the same steps made by their competitors all over the United States.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has already advised all the car makers to have the recall as wide as possible and cover beyond the limited boundaries with high humidity. BMW has followed the advice.
The air bag makers have confessed that exposure to high humidities mas cause damage to the air bags. It could break the propellant in the inflators and may cause them to spray the driver with metal shrapnel as the air bag inflates.
The recall was then at first limited to areas with high humidity. This was the focus at the beginning of the retraction process by the NHTSA. However, they started to be more vigilant with the recall when reports of the same incidents happened in Puerto Rico and Florida.
BMW makers have assured the NHTSA that they will be replacing around 140,000 BMW 3 series vehicles in the US which ranges from all models starting from year 2004 up to 2006.
Other than the German luxury carmaker, other auto mobile creators have also expanded their recall. Mazda Motor Corporation, Honda Motor Company, Ford Motor Company and FCA US LLC or previously known as Chrysler Group LLC. FCA is under Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV.
